Jim Gaffigan -- Great Comedian, Great Actor, Great Autograph Signer!

I’ve always been a fan of stand-up comedians. I guess it all stems from the fact that we hear these surveys that say “More people fear public speaking than death.” And we’ve all had that moment we had to go in front of a crowd and speak, and we got those butterflies. Well, comedians have to do that, with the added difficulty of making people laugh. Knowing that other comedians are there judging them more harshly. Knowing that drunk (or stupid) people are just waiting for a moment to heckle.

If I really like a comedians set and they’re selling their CD after the show, I’ll buy it and have them autograph it. I always dread doing this, for one reason. Usually the CD has many of the jokes we just saw them perform on stage. You see, when you see the Rolling Stones you love when they sing Satisfaction. It’s a song you know and love, and brings you much satisfaction. Yet if you hear a comedian do a bit you’ve heard, you already know the punchline. You also (sometimes unfairly), think they should be writing more new material.

Jim Gaffigan is a comedian that has gone on to do many TV shows and films. And he might have some signature bits…where he sings the “Hot Pockets” jingle, or does that voice under his breathe, saying what he’s sure somebody in the audience is thinking about him (“He’s kind of big. I bet he sweats a lot in bed.”).

I’ve seen him three times in concert, and it’s almost always new material. They were all shows where the entire crowd was laughing non-stop, too.

He always does meet-and-greets after the show as well. The first time, I brought the album soundtrack to Footloose, the Kevin Bacon film. No, he had nothing to do with it. But he does a bit where he talks about how he loves everything with bacon. Even water chestnuts are edible, because they get wrapped around bacon. So I had him write on the record, “This movie stars Kevin Bacon. Sounds delicious.”

Those around us laughed at this request. Others had boxes of Hot Pockets for him to autograph, and many had his CDs.

Once on his website, I ordered a few of the CDs, with a request that he sign them. He did.

So I thought I’d give you guys the heads up. If you want to see one of the best comedians working today, and you like collecting autographs – go see one of his shows.
