Floyd Mayweather vs John Cleese: And the Loser is...You!

I’ve done stories before about the lame “meet-and-greet” prices musicians charged to meet with fans before or after concerts. Most of that stemmed from the fact that they would be expensive, and sometimes you weren’t allowed to get an autograph or a photo with the artist.

This one takes the cake, though. With all the Covid-19 and other charities celebs have been working with lately, many of them are offering up things for a hefty price. You can play golf with some, have dinner, or star in one of their movies. Yet it goes to charity, and it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

The reason the one I’m about to tell you about takes the cake is because it’s $1,500 to meet the celeb, and...it doesn’t go to charity. AND...you don’t really meet them. It’s an online meet-and-greet.

Boxer Floyd Mayweather certainly doesn’t need the money. He’s made close to a billion dollars in the ring. I think he made $100 million on one fight -- an easy bout against Conor McGregor. So it makes absolutely no sense why he’d want to charge fans such outrageous prices.

The “Ultimate Premium” is $1,500 but includes three autographed boxing cards. But if I was paying $1,500, it would be to meet Sugar Ray Leonard, and spar with him for a few rounds. Not listening to Mayweather blather on about something idiotic online.

The website Fanmio does offer you the option of making monthly payments, if $1,500 is a bit steep for your budget. Or, you can do the smaller package. That’s $64.99. That only gets you a T-shirt (but it is made with “real gold print and ultra-fine fabric”) and the CHANCE to possibly talk with him. Only 3 people will win that opportunity to chat with the champ.

For a grand, you get the 1-on-1 chat online and a recording of it, along with the shirt. Monthly payments of $73 work for them, which is mighty nice of them.

I won’t go through all the various packages, but only the most expensive gets ya the autographs.

Fanmio just signed John Cleese, and he’s a lot cheaper (which makes sense; he has a weak right hook). He starts at $29.99, with five fans getting the “chance” to talk with him.

$199 gets you the chat with the Fawlty Towers and Monty Python legend (I’d end up asking about one of the best comedies ever -- A Fish Called Wanda).

At $299, you get the autographed photo, with the video chat with Cleese.

There are a few others you can meet on their site, but the one I’m most suspicious of is the Santa Claus. I’m guessing it’s not even the real Santa.

He might need the cash. I've heard he's isn't exactly smart with his money and he does blow millions on cars.

As for the charity for COVID19, bidding for dinner and golf with Peyton Manning is currently at $500K.

Holy cow, it's up that high? I always think that, if you bid and win something like that, as fun as golfing with a Hall of Famer would be, I'm bringing 100 footballs for him to sign, to at least pay for some of that cost!!!

Yeah, on the sports talk show I was listening to on the radio today that first brought this story to my attention, they said he was really bad with his money. So, even though he's made close to a billion, sure...I suppose he could be close to broke, but highly unlikely. For that to happen, you need to have like...a Billy Joel, Willie Nelson, or Ted Nugent thing where a manager stole it all and you didn't realize it.

What I can't figure out is this. The optics if it are bad. Not even that the price to "meet" Mayweather is so high, but...if I'm his manager, and he needs to do this to make a few thousand bucks (because believe me, not more than a few people are going to pay to do this)...I'd say, as his manager, "Let's announce that a portion of the proceeds go to [insert charity here]." You don't even have to tell people how much (unless there's some legality I don't know about), and then you still make a pretty penny, but nobody thinks less of you.

Peyton would probably sign the 100 balls too. He's a good signer. Dinner with Tom Brady, home opener game jersey, and tickets to the game are at $775K.

Mayweather is bad with his money, has a huge entourage, and probably has made bad investments. I agree, the optics of this is bad. You expect Tori Spelling or Val Kilmer to do something like this as they are hard up on money.

That would be interesting if you won the dinner with Tom Brady, and...it was hamburgers and fries. For that much, I want him feeding me caviar on a little spoon, some lobster, etc...

Will Gisele be with Tom at the dinner as well? Jackpot!

It's funny you said that, Joe. When I mentioned that price to my wife, she said the same thing!! (but I think she got a bit more risque with it)
